Background Link: Aphrodi comes from a family that’s fairly well off, and lived a comfortable life albeit a little lonely and materialistic. His father is Japanese, and his mother Korean so he spent his first nine years in Korea before moving to Japan with his father as his job demanded it. His parents used to take him out to dinner parties to try and socialise with their “circles” but he stopped going once he was old enough to say no, and his parents just left him at home.
He spent a lot of time on his own growing up, and even a large house can only be explored so many times before it gets boring. Aphrodi started to go out on his own but his parents either didn’t notice or didn’t care and let him get on with whatever he’s doing.
Later, he was scouted to join a soccer club from Zeus Middle School as part of “Project Z”. This is where he gained his nickname “Aphrodi”, based on the Goddess of Love, Aphrodite to fit the team’s theme.
In the team, was made the captain of other children who all came from fairly different backgrounds but had the fact that they either didn’t have parents or their parents weren’t around long enough to care. They were trained to beat a rival school, Raimon, and prevent them from winning the Football Frontier competition that Zeus would also be participating in. The whole thing was a project of Kageyama, the main antagonist of the first season, and Zeus would be his ace.
Before the finals, he dropped briefly into Raimon School in the middle of their practice to flaunt his power, and tell them that they should give up since they’ve already lost.
Zeus managed to defeat all the other teams that they went up against with little difficulty until they met Raimon at the finals – although the game had started out in their favour, Raimon had proven to be more stubborn than they had anticipated and refused to give up. Eventually the goalkeeper of Raimon had perfected a technique that allowed him to block Aphrodi’s shots, and in the end they lost. He was in shock at the time because the odds had been so unlikely but he had learned his lesson from it not to assume the outcome of games.
In the second season, he only appeared briefly to aid Raimon (who, at the time, was going around the country to build up a strong team to fight against “aliens” that had appeared and started destroying schools) before being sent to hospital after pushing himself too hard trying to show one of the members of the team something in a way that he would understand since talking didn’t work. By that time, he had already improved enough from the last time they had met and was able to keep up with the rest of Raimon, who had also improved significantly.
When he shows up again, it’s in the Football Frontier International competition, which is exactly what it says on the tin, during the Asia selection tournaments. He was a midfielder for Korea’s national team Fire Dragon, although not the captain of this team. The outcome of the match was 4-3 to Raimon; although this time he took the loss more gracefully and wished Inazuma Japan (Japan’s national team with the show’s main protagonists in) luck when facing the rest of the world.
AU Background: There’s not much difference in Aphrodi’s AU background until the end of the first season where it’s revealed that he and his team have been taking a drug named “Aqua of the Gods”. In this AU, his consumption of this drug had been fatal; partially because he had felt the need to test it out first as the captain of the team, and then out of desperation to win. Since it was a new development and its side effects unknown at the time, there were only a few victims, Aphrodi unfortunately one of them.
However, since he had an affinity with the Powers That Are that connect life and death (as shown through his ability to sprout wings beforehand), Aphrodi struck a deal with them; he gets to wander around the Earth freely while doing errands for them – cheesy things like spreading smiles and good deeds, but things that need to be done nonetheless: a part time angel, in simpler terms.
He stayed behind in Japan for a few months longer to adjust to living to this kind of life– long enough to bump into and help out the Raimon and their fight against the “aliens”.
Following this, he moved back to Korea to live with his mother for a new beginning. Aphrodi still played soccer regularly and was scouted to join the Korean national team. He tries to live as close to normal as he can, save sometimes making a small miracle happen (although these are rare and he requires permission to carry them out) or taking his wings out for a fly because he’s too lazy to walk – although the latter he did even before he became a part time angel since he developed the ability to materialise wings during his time at Zeus.
Personality: Aphrodi has been brought up to have respect for those older than he and to always act with correct manners which makes him polite and softly-worded to new people. However, he is also capable of being bratty and spoiled due to being an only child to rich parents and being constantly complimented by complete strangers when he was younger. These instances are usually reserved for when he’s with people he’s familiar with rather than strangers, since he thinks first impressions and appearances are important.
Even though his nickname is a reminder of the time when he was making the biggest mistakes of his life, Aphrodi feels like if he is reminded he’s less likely to make these mistakes again. He’s someone who moves on rather than dwells in the past, and is more than willing keep to on striving forwards to self-improvement. However, he tends to gloss over the past when talking to people – even those familiar with him – even though he has often spent hours reflecting on it himself.
Aphrodi feels an obligation to live up to his name and tries his best not to hate, to forgive easily. Unfortunately, the “beauty” part makes him act vain and spend a lot longer than he probably should on his appearance, but it’s easier to look after his appearance so he (rather shamefully) concentrates more time on that aspect.
Another large part of his personality built up from being a spoiled child and being praised as a “God” when he was still at Zeus. This has caused Aphrodi to develop a God complex, although since his defeat and death, it has evolved more into “take responsibility for everyone” mindset rather than the “I am better than you” he harboured before. Although he does still perceive himself as above other people, he translates it to having to make sure that they’re taken care of and are doing well – kind of like the captain that he wished he had been before. Partially for this reason, he’s more of a solo-worker than part of a team. The other part is that Aphrodi has trust issues – he doesn’t like to trust people, but he expects that people trust him. It’s one sided and selfish and he knows it, but he doesn’t like the idea of opening up to anyone. He doesn’t really have any idea how to since his relationship with his parents is detached and so he never really had an example.
Aphrodi is well aware of his assets, and he is proud of them – Aphrodi is more than willing to flaunt what he has, and often ends up looking a little egoistic even though he can be modest if he thinks it’s suitable, such as when he’s been beaten in a game or when he is genuinely impressed by the skill of someone. Because of this, he thinks that he should put himself in front of his friends and people that he cares about because he thinks himself a better person to do the job. Even if it is potentially dangerous, Aphrodi will still go ahead because not only is he (probably) better suited for it, he is already dead so it doesn’t matter so much if he ends up hurt (see abilities for more information).
Due to the amount of time he stayed at home on his own, he’s fairly well-read and has an active imagination. Normally, he would prefer to keep the conversation topics light and more enjoyable, but he’s capable of being serious when he needs to be. As someone who keeps to themselves anyway, he has trouble telling people things so he tries to either keep them talking about their own lives or avoiding any topics that would require him to give sensitive information away; his captaincy and time with Kageyama, for one, and matters of life and death since he doesn’t like the reminder that he’s not really alive.
The only thing that Aphrodi is really scared about is human contact because since his death, he became cold to touch as he found out by accident when shaking hands with someone. Since his state is a secret to everyone but himself, it would be a pretty large giveaway that he is cold all the time, so he avoids being touched, or touching people directly.
Abilities: Aphrodi is naturally very athletic – being a soccer player in Inazuma would require one to be due to the rather intense games that are considered normal (balls being set on fire regularly and kids being knocked up into the air after a tackle for example) – and since he’s only “kind of” an angel, he doesn’t get any of the perks other than not really needing to sleep or eat as he’s not growing. He already had the ability to bring out wings beforehand, so it wasn’t really an addition made after death.
Aphrodi gets tired and injured just like any human or mortal would, as well as being able to feel pain as well as the next person, and after which he will need to eat and rest so that his body can recover or else his body will not repair itself (as it doesn’t have the means to do so), so really he’s not too different from any person on the street at that point.
His speed is well above average – in the anime, he is shown walking around in games more often than not (although he is capable of running if he feels that it’s necessary, but walking is preferred) and is still able to keep up with everyone else. So it’s not that he’s lazy; he’s just practiced hard enough at it not to need to run.
Aphrodi’s kick is also pretty powerful, since he is the only player to have broken a net in the series, and although he had help from Aqua of the Gods, he still would have had to have a good kick originally to break the net. His signature move, “God Knows” involves taking the ball up high with his wings to gain as much altitude as he deems necessary and shooting it down from there.
Sample Entry:
“Ah, sorry.” Aphrodi apologises after bumping into someone and smiles apologetically before walking away. He’s been wandering around town window-shopping all day – it was one of those lazy days where nothing happens, and Aphrodi just wanted to get out of the house. Everyone had already made plans for that day, and of course his mother wasn’t at home (when is she ever, really?). It doesn’t matter, though, because he’s had a good day outside even if he was on his own.
He rather likes watching people mill about, so he was more than happy to just walk around without a real plan of going anywhere. However, now it’s getting late and his feet are a little tired – not to mention, the sun is starting to set, so he meanders to the path home.
The wind starts blowing harder and Aphrodi frowns and tightens the scarf around his neck, running his fingers through his hair to make sure that it hadn’t knotted up in the gust just now. Great, now he has an incentive to get home faster, if only because he doesn’t want to be walking around with tangles at the back of his head.
Aphrodi takes a look around to check if there are any people around, and since there is only a few, he decides to stretch out his wings. So long as it’s not a huge crowd of people, Aphrodi usually deems it okay to do so – it’s not like it would be the first time he did something like this in the middle of the street.
He doesn’t particularly want to go home, but he has to at least pretend to go to sleep at night. The thought makes him slow down and take the long way home, and by the time he arrives at his front door his mood has dropped like a stone.
Another long night with a book it is, then.
